Wedding Florals: August Flowers

Summer is still in full swing and its bountiful explosion of colors and scents continues to delight and inspire.  Welcome the addition of herbs to this months seasonal flowers - such as Rosemary, which is at it's peak and beginning to even burst with those lovely little purple blossoms.

  1. Dahlia - With forty species to choose from, these colorful spiky flowers bloom from midsummer through a first frost and cover the rainbow in color, with the exception of blue, which they make up for by having dramatic black and fresh white color options). The petal-styles vary as much as their colors. Some Dahlias have a central disc with a single outer ring of petals, others feature a flower made up of dense elongated tubular florets (making them almost spiky looking), whereas others feature double blooms that are ball shaped or slightly flattened and  rounded at the tips. They also range in size from giant 10-inch "dinner plate" blooms to the 2-inch lollipop-style pompons. Dahlias symbolize hope for an everlasting union between two people, making them the perfect symbolic wedding flower.
  2. Sweet Pea - Sweet Pea's are one of the most romantic flowers, in our humble option. Their delicate, small, ruffled blooms feature a sensuous fragrance that seems to be a mix of orange blossoms and honey. Their most common colors includes reds, navy blues, pastel lavender, pinks, and whites. These colors can also be displayed as solid colors, bicolor, and streaked or flaked flowers. Sweet Pea's symbolize blissfulness.
  3. Oriental Lily - Another delightful blossom that is well-know for it's pleasing scent.  These trumpet-shaped flowers come in a sunset of colors including red, orange, yellow, pink, white and often feature darker colors (lovingly referred to as "freckles") on their inner petals.  Multiple blossoms can be on one sparsely foliaged dark green stem. White lilies are known to represent modesty and virginity, whereas orange lilies signify passion and yellow gaiety.
  4. Rosemary - No longer just a favorite herb paired with roasted potatoes and chicken! This aromatic, woody herb is the latest in unique flower trends with its evergreen, needle-like leaves and white, pink, purple, or blue flowers.  Rosemary is known as the herb of love and remembrance.
  5. Camellia - Camellias come from evergreen shrubs whose leaves are thick, serrated, and glossy. Their large flowers feature five to nine petals and are primarily the colors white, pink, or red.  Although yellow blooms and multicolored camellias that have striated petals, variegation or different colored tips or outer petals do exist. Camellia are considered a symbol of desire, passion, and refinement.
  6. Snapdragon - Named for their snout-shaped flowers, these flowers bloom in a spiral manner around tall green, leafless stems that average 10-15 of these unique blooms per stem.  Some Snapdragons feature double flowers, others can be bell-shaped, and some blooms are very similar in form to azaleas.  Colors include white, pale to bright pink, orange, yellow, red, purples and even bordering on neon colored. In addition, they can also be bi and mixed colored.  They are a symbol of graciousness.
